Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you SNK Heroines’ final character - Terry Bogard. As far as genderbent/rule 63/woman version of a male character is concerned, this design is genius. It’s a call back to the amazing Midnight Bliss version of Terry from SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos (a forgettable game for all the wrong reasons) and somehow surprisingly makes sense. It’s a wee bit more risque in SNK Heroines which makes sense due to its status as a fanservice game.
SNK still managed to screw up what should have been one of the better received characters in the game with the following sentence added to the profile: “The main character of the Fatal Fury series. As a result of some prank (?) by someone else, he has been stuck in the body of a woman. He has a dark past, but doesn’t let it show through his bright, optimistic personality. Your everyday American guy.” (Source: SNK Heroines’ Official Website) Adding to the fiasco, the trailer itself tries to shame Terry as being irregular with several quotes treating Terry like a freakshow.
Why couldn’t they just let girl Terry be girl Terry? Instead, we have some creepy dynamics in play (which aren’t helped with the reveal of the story that is Kukri trapping all of the women in a pocket dimension so that he can select the strongest as his wife... and if you’re wondering who Kukri is, you haven’t played KoFXIV, or maybe you have - he was one of the most forgettable characters) especially since in all of the outfits, much like the rest of the women, Terry does not look a single bit comfortable with the clothing or the situation. Keep in mind - in the actual game, it’s not an issue.
Beyond those who already hated the game due to the fanservice, I’ve yet to see anyone actually have problems with Terry as a character design. The only problem comes from the presentation of the women just not wanting to be there, being forced against their will to do this and, well, the whole Terry’s a girl, but we’re still gonna use male pronouns.
Still, I am not one to complain without offering solutions. Here’s a solution that they can use, for free:
Change all the pronouns to feminine pronouns
Easiest way to at least remove that part of the fiasco. Look, this Terry is a woman, don’t worry about us we’ll get used to it. Anime got us used to thirsting after anthropomorphic versions of ships, swords, Earth itself and blood cells. We’ll thirst after Terry, don’t you worry none.
They can’t change the art direction for the game, and not all the women hate it (Shermie is happy on all her pics, though I’d wager it’s because she’s actually ALIVE instead of dead, like she usually is) but c’mon, we can do without the transphobic shit in 2018, and it sucks that Terry’s amazing design is tainted by it.
