Those of you who aren’t in the TAY Discord (and really, you should be!) may not know that some giveaways were done in order to commemorate the 3 years of its existence. Well, during those giveaways, this happened:

Honestly, I also believe this is completely ludicrous (either that or I have been blessed by the raffle gawds) So I figure I would give back in the only way I know how (that isn’t giving back the games since I already redeemed them) and that is by logging my time with at least two out of the three games as I want to keep Life is Strange for streaming otherwise I’ll try to savescum out of my choices.

Don’t expect me to like Tales of Berseria. I actually wanted to play the game because I heard by others that it was actually pretty damned good, but the only Tales game I enjoyed thoroughly was Vesperia. (Tales of) Destiny was good but it overstayed its welcome near the end, I hate-finished Symphonia from 1/3rd of the game, and never could stomach finishing Graces f and Xillia. In short, I fully intend to go ham if it does not please me, for your reading pleasure, of course.

So, Destiny 2. I have no prior history with this game to be honest. I never played Destiny 1, what with it being console exclusive and being one of those KBM elitists when it comes to FPSes. Plus, I tend to play games for lore, and Destiny’s always had a shaky relationship in actually showing said lore inside the game.

I played through the tutorial as all classes, but so far I’m not really digging the Titan. I get that it’s the “tank” class but both its subclasses (Sentinel and Striker) just feel awful. I’m not as far in the other two, so we’ll see if I enjoy them more.

You start in medias res - The Last City, whatever that is, is being attacked and you are part of the people supposed to defend it. Which, if I can be honest here, is ok if you’re setting up a story, but as a tutorial, it rings hollow. Being in the middle of an unprecedented attack on the Traveler (whatever that is) and the Last City is not the time to learn that you can kind-of double jump or how to use your “power” (read, your super attack and grenade. They don’t teach you anything about what you’ll get later - At least they were nice to do that) to complete objectives.

Naturally, you show up as the Guardian with the Big Dick Energy to go onto the mothership and bring down the shields! Except... for some reason everything goes wrong, and big dude (who’s name I conveniently forgot) kicks you back to Earth.

As a plot starter, I have to say I would have dug it if it wasn’t a video game. If you handed me this as “Destiny 2 : The Movie” I’d have thought it was fine. The tutorial being followed by losing all of your powers (and having to limp very very slowly through the Lost City) is trying to evoke some gravitas that simply isn’t there for someone who is starting Destiny 2 as cold as I did. Perhaps Bungie figured that anyone playing this game would be familiar with the lore or anything. In the end, all it really feels is a rehash of all those Metroidvanias where you just lose all the good shit you got from the last few games and have to start anew.

By itself, the tutorial was fine - It gave enough guidance so that someone who usually doesn’t play these games was able to find their way easily, though I did get stalled trying to figure out where in the hell I should go, even dying because I thought I should be making a difficult jump when the solution was, of course, much simpler (double jump onto a higher platform, instead of trying to do a literally impossible jump).

I’m enjoying myself at least! I’d forgotten how fun it is to do the shooty bang bang stuff from time to time, and interestingly enough even as a squishy I find myself playing it more like Doom than a cover shooter, kind of a ultra-aggressive style, going for melee kills when I get the chance, etc. Granted, my highest character is my Titan, where it makes sense to do that - I’m pretty sure my Warlock’s going to die horribly if I try it with him.

Still, if you want to hit me up in-game, it’s Hattledotnet#1804, but fair warning - I have no idea what I’m doing.
