Yeah, this game again. I didn’t intend on writing another post about it, but apparently cute girls with fanservice outfits is a popular subject around here. I don’t get it, but then again I passively thirst about anything that looks remotely human, so that’s just me.
Setting the unfortunate wording for Terry and the game’s overall presentation aside, there’s still some quality outfits there. We all have our preferences when it comes to fanservice, but some of them are really cool and filled with both types of fanservice - the fetishy one and the “SNK is 40 years old this year” one.
Anyway, in no particular order, here’s my list of favorites out of the entire roster so far. You can proceed to tell me I have no taste in the comments.
As silly as it looks, I like the smug air of confidence that Leona exhibits with this outfit. It’s as fetish as they come, but she looks comfortable with it, which is in stark contrast to the other characters who often look ashamed or annoyed with the practice.
The classic green calls back to the older days of the Ikari Warriors, circa 1994 when King of Fighters first started. There’s pockets for a gun, which we all know Leona doesn’t need, and there’s even the eyepatch to ensure no one mistakes it just for a regular military outfit, but rather a fanservice outfit of her adopted father, Commander Heidern.
There’s even underboob for those of you who into that. In my opinion, this outfit has something for everyone.
Considering how much of an arcade fiend and SNK historian I am, this one had to make the list. This is literally Athena’s outfit in the SNK arcade game Athena, complete with basic sword for unwieldiness.
Unfortunately, Athena Asamiya does not seem comfortable wearing this outfit which does bring it down a notch. She might not be used to swinging a sword, or maybe it’s the fact that the outfit shows a lot more skin than a Japanese pop star should show. At least, I don’t recall idols being able to show this much because the fans would revolt otherwise.
Then again, she’s been a high school pop star since... 1986 (1987 overseas), so maybe, just maybe, I’m stretching a tad when it comes to judging. Great nostalgia outfit. I love it.
I’m not a fan of the Mobile/Pachinko-era women added to KoF. Love Heart, Mui Mui and Alice I find are derivatives, or just don’t make sense as characters. Nakoruru being added was a bit of a shock too, but that I can let rock as she is a full fledged character.
That being said, the idea of turning a pirate into a cop is hilarious to me. Doubly so when you make the gun so obviously fake but the rest of the implements real. I honestly think the green gun makes the picture. It turns her blush and sweatdrop from “I’m wearing a fetishy cop outfit and I don’t like it.” to “I look ridiculous with this fake ass gun.”
Although I gotta admit I don’t know why in the hell are her KNEES blushing.
You can clearly tell that what kind of fanservice this is playing to, but personally I enjoy the simplicity of the outfits considering how Mian’s masks and outfit are so well detailed. The shyness of the character is well represented with the glasses and the blush, making it probably the only embarassed blush I’m okay with in the entire game.
There’s not a lot more to say about it. The ponytail looks cute to me nad the glasses have the right color to stand out but not dominate the entire image. The rolled up sleeves fit the aesthetic and frame the obvious fanservice for those who care about that. It’s also arguably one of the most sensible outfits they’ve got in the game, so she’s got that going for her - As plain as it is, I think her design makes it look a lot better.
You might think “Isn’t a schoolgirl uniform super lazy?” and I would agree with you if it wasn’t on the least likely character to have one. Arguably the second oldest woman on the roster (Mai is the first), the idea of putting this femme fatale in a schoolgirl outfit screams fetishy fanservice so hard that it loops back around to being awesome. Just look at it! She’s obviously embarassed, but that smile says she’s gonna be fucking up whoever talks shit about it. Either that or the realization that flamenco stance in a short skirt has implications.
I believe the weakest part of the design is the overly poofy socks - they don’t really fit either the character or the outfit. I do understand that they couldn’t do long socks because of her moves though.
I know she’s not wearing official Dallas Cowboys stuff but the color similarity is striking and don’t tell me you don’t see it. The star has always been Terry’s symbol, and I assume they really wanted to represent her classic 2P color here.
I especially like how in the image, she’s still pissed but goddamn she will CHEER ON ANYWAY. Unfortunate implications made by NISA/SNK aside, I really think this is Terry’s best outfit in the lot.
I honestly think they missed the boat on making an obscure link by either featuring Brian Battler’s football team colors or Lucky Glauber’s basketball team (which is an expy for the Lakers, by the by.) Still, it’s a lot better than Steampunk Terry’s one winged mechanical angel by far.
And that’s pretty much it for the outfits. What a wild ride this was. I don’t get why the official artist likes to put red knees on everyone, but I suppose that’s just their style. Assuming the game finds its audience (which it likely will), there will probably be DLC and I’m hoping that Miss X or Hinako make it in. Miss X for the history and Hinako because sumo gal is A Good and needs to be in more games. Still, what about you? Anything strike your fancy in the outfits? Are you a gameplay-only person (which apparently might be good? At least from what I saw other than the Dream Finish mechanic which seems iffy, it seems like it could be a good casual fun game) that don’t care about this?
On this note, I’ll leave you with the best team you can possibly make, and don’t bother looking for one because there isn’t any.
